What is a preliminary hearing?

A preliminary hearing, like a trial, is a test. A small test. Think of it as a quiz.

The trial, that's the big test. We'll call it the final exam.

The test

This hearing tests if the accusation made against you by the government fits the charge, based on the evidence at the hearing.

Failing the test

If the accusation doesn't fit the charge, the government fails the quiz. The charge should be thrown out.

Passing the test

If the accusation does fit, the government passes the test. They get a chance to sit for the final exam. The charge will move forward to the next step on the way to trial.

A quiz to see if the accusation fits the charge, based on the evidence.
